Marine Rescue NSW volunteers were kept busy over the 2024 Easter long weekend, responding to a record number of search and rescue missions across the state. Volunteer crews completed a total of 163 missions, including 54 emergency responses, over the four-day holiday period, safely returning 440 people to shore.
Deputy Commissioner Darren Schott attributed the high number of incidents to the favorable weather conditions that encouraged many boaters to hit the state’s waterways. He emphasized the importance of boaters carrying enough fuel for their voyage, as almost a third of the responses were related to fuel issues.
The Greater Sydney region saw the highest number of search and rescue missions, with volunteers completing 77 missions and safely returning 220 people to shore. The Hunter/Central Coast and Illawarra regions also had their share of incidents, with 40 and 24 missions completed respectively.
Notable rescues included volunteers from Marine Rescue Forster Tuncurry assisting two sailors whose yacht experienced mechanical failure, and Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie responding to a distress call after a mast snapped on a sloop with four people on board.
Marine Rescue NSW encourages all boaters to Log On with their service every time they hit the water, as it saves vital time in case of an emergency. The organization, made up of dedicated volunteers, is committed to keeping boaters safe on the water and supporting local communities.
