Marion High School in Lynchburg has once again been crowned “Tennis Town” for the second consecutive year. The Marion Scarlet Hurricanes clinched the VHSL Class 2 girls team title with a 5-1 victory over Region 2B champion Central Woodstock at Liberty University.

Led by two-time defending VHSL Class 2 singles champion Parker White, the Marion team showcased their talent and determination on the court. White, a junior, expressed her excitement at the team’s victory, stating, “I didn’t think we were going to be able to clinch it in singles, but we got the job done.”

With a record of 20-2, Marion becomes the first girls tennis team from far Southwest Virginia to win consecutive state crowns since Gate City achieved the feat from 2014-2016. Coach Doug Grubb commended the team’s family atmosphere and chemistry, emphasizing the role it played in their success.

The top four players from last year’s championship team returned to secure another title, with White dominating her singles match and the team performing exceptionally well in doubles. The victory was a testament to their hard work and dedication throughout the season.

In the Class 2 boys doubles, sophomores Jack Clem and Cooper Hurst from Richlands also emerged victorious with a 6-1, 6-3 win over their opponents from Clarke County in Region B. Clem, who had a perfect record last season, credited his improvement to hard work and focus on consistency.

The day was filled with intense matches and exciting victories, showcasing the talent and determination of the young athletes from Marion and Richlands. The community rallied behind their teams, celebrating their achievements and looking forward to more success in the future.
