Mark Morris’ Hetland secures 3rd place at Districts, outshines R.A. Long’s Zdunich to earn spot at State

The Vancouver Tennis Center was buzzing with excitement as the 2A District IV girls tennis tournament took center stage, featuring a thrilling showdown between two fierce competitors from Longview.

Maddy Hetland of Mark Morris and Audrey Zdunich of R.A. Long, long-time rivals, faced off in a match that had everyone on the edge of their seats. The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, with lead changes and momentum swings keeping the spectators glued to the action.

After a hard-fought battle, Hetland emerged victorious with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win over Zdunich. Both players displayed incredible skill and determination, leaving it all on the court in their quest for a State berth.

Despite the intense competition, there was mutual respect and admiration between the two players and their coaches. Zdunich, although falling short of an automatic spot in the state tournament, will be listed as an alternate, showcasing her resilience and sportsmanship.

As the tournament concluded, both players reflected on the match and the season they had shared. Zdunich, who is set to attend the University of Mary on a full scholarship, expressed pride in her performance and gratitude for the experience.

With Hetland moving on to face new challenges at the State tournament, the tennis community in Longview will be rallying behind her, wishing her the best of luck in the upcoming competition. The 2A state girls tennis tournament promises to be an exciting event, with top talent from across the state converging at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle on May 24-25.
