Champaign Central’s Girls’ Soccer Team Secures Regional Title

The Champaign Central girls’ soccer team showcased their dominance on the field as they secured their second Class 2A regional title in the last four seasons with a 3-1 victory over Centennial on Friday night at McKinley Field.

Freshman standout Rylie Schulze was the star of the game, scoring the Maroons’ first two goals to lead her team to victory. Schulze credited her teammates for setting her up for success with perfect passes and opportunities to score.

Central senior Cricket Wagner expressed her excitement over the win, especially against their rivals, Centennial. Wagner highlighted the team’s determination to come out on top after falling short last year.

Despite a valiant effort from Centennial’s backup goalie Sam Doughty, who made 16 saves in her varsity debut, Schulze’s second goal early in the second half proved to be the difference-maker.

Central coach Steve Whiteley praised Schulze’s versatility on the field, describing her as an engine that never stops. The team’s cohesive gameplay and relentless attack kept Centennial on their heels throughout the match.

With the win, Champaign Central advances to a sectional semifinal game against either Pleasant Plains or Rochester. The Maroons are prepared to face any challenge that comes their way, embracing the underdog mentality as they continue their quest for success on the big stage.
