The 2024 Great Northern Conference tennis match in Escanaba and Gladstone was filled with excitement and fierce competition before the rain interrupted play on Tuesday. Despite the weather, the players showcased their skills and determination on the court.

Marquette emerged as the tournament champions with a total score of 36 points, followed closely by Escanaba in second place with 27 points. Kingsford secured the third spot with 23 points, while West Iron County, Gladstone, and Munising rounded out the standings.

One of the standout performances of the day came from Escanaba senior Jackson Cousineau, who clinched a third-place finish and displayed his prowess on the court. In the number three singles championship match, Escanaba’s Reid Brazeau faced off against Caden Lauren in a thrilling encounter. Brazeau took the first set 6-3, but the match was cut short due to the rain with Brazeau leading 40-30 in the second set.

Brazeau also secured a victory over Kingsford’s Fletcher Hulkkonen in a closely contested match. The tournament saw other impressive performances, including Kingsford freshman Evan Grymes picking up wins over tough opponents to advance to the championship.

Escanaba excelled in doubles matches, with Nick Chaillier and Andrew Lord as well as Adam Prey and Caden Fulsher securing wins to advance to the championship rounds. Despite the weather interruption, the tournament provided a platform for the community to witness the young athletes compete at a high level.

As the teams now prepare for the UP Finals on May 29 in Marquette, the competition is expected to intensify as the players aim to showcase their skills and claim victory in the upcoming tournament.
