Marvel terminates 15 employees

Marvel Entertainment and Marvel Studios are facing layoffs as the company refocuses its content slate. Around 15 junior level employees in production and development will be affected by the layoffs, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The decision to downsize comes as Marvel scales back its output after a period of rapid content production to feed Disney+. With only one film, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” set to release this year and just two live-action TV shows in the pipeline, Disney CEO Bob Iger emphasized the need to prioritize quality projects over quantity.

“We’ve reduced output, particularly at Marvel,” Iger stated during an earnings call in February. “You get aggressive at making sure the films you’re making can be even better. Sometimes, you kill projects you don’t believe in.”

The layoffs are a result of the company’s efforts to streamline operations following the integration of Marvel Entertainment into Disney’s larger business units. This restructuring also included the departure of longtime chairman Ike Perlmutter last year.

Marvel’s recent history of diminishing returns on projects, despite a busy content release schedule in previous years, has prompted the company to reassess its strategy and focus on more promising ventures. The layoffs mark a significant shift in Marvel’s approach as it aims to deliver high-quality content to its audience.
