Authorities reported that 152 individuals were rescued after torrential rains caused water levels to rise rapidly, prompting warnings for residents to seek higher ground.
In Sydney, Australia’s largest city, 72 rescues were carried out as hazardous deluges hit several low-lying suburbs. The situation was exacerbated by the Warragamba Dam reaching 96% of its capacity, with concerns that it could spill over on Monday. However, reports indicated that the dam had already overflowed two days earlier than expected due to the heavy rainfall.
The New South Wales State Emergency Service issued around 15 emergency evacuation orders across the state and received 4,128 calls for help within a 24-hour period. State premier Chris Minns warned that flood levels in western Sydney were still rising, posing a continued threat to residents.
With almost a month’s worth of rain falling in just 24 hours, Sydney and surrounding areas were severely impacted by the deluge. Authorities advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors to ensure their safety.
