Sydney, Australia, was hit with almost a month’s worth of rainfall in just 24 hours, causing widespread flooding and chaos in the city and surrounding areas. Authorities reported that 152 people had to be rescued from the floodwaters, with 72 rescues taking place in Sydney alone.
The torrential rains led to hazardous deluges in low-lying suburbs of Sydney, with reports indicating that the Warragamba Dam, which supplies 80% of the city’s water, had spilled over two days earlier than expected. Emergency evacuation orders were issued across the state of New South Wales, with the State Emergency Service receiving over 4,000 calls for help in a single day.
State premier Chris Minns warned that flood levels in western Sydney were still rising, posing a continued threat to residents. The downpours that hit the region on Friday amounted to almost a month’s worth of rain in just one day, causing cars to be submerged in water and roads to be completely flooded.
Authorities advised residents to avoid non-essential travel and stay indoors as the situation unfolded. Sydney received 4.4 inches of rain in the 24-hour period, just shy of the average April rainfall of 4.7 inches. The city was left grappling with the aftermath of the deluge, with cleanup efforts underway and residents urged to remain vigilant in the face of ongoing flood risks.
