Max Azzarello, the man who tragically set himself on fire outside Donald Trump’s hush money trial venue in New York, had a troubled past filled with run-ins with the law in Florida. The 37-year-old from St. Augustine faced a series of legal issues, including misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief and disturbing the peace.

One notable incident occurred on August 19, 2023, when Azzarello threw a glass of wine at a framed autograph of Bill Clinton displayed in the lobby of a hotel, causing damage to the autograph and surrounding area. Just two days later, he was arrested again for stripping down to his boxers, shouting at hotel customers, and cursing at them before being taken into custody.

Surveillance footage captured Azzarello vandalizing signs outside a library and a pest control company, believing the latter was there to harm children and dogs. Following his final arrest, police paperwork revealed that Azzarello was suicidal and unemployed. He spent time in a psych ward and described himself online as an “investigative researcher,” although his online postings suggested he was more of a conspiracy theorist.

Before his self-immolation outside the courthouse, Azzarello traveled to New York without his family’s knowledge. He threw papers into the air, including printouts from a Substack newsletter titled “The Ponzi Papers,” with his final entry declaring his act as a protest against an alleged impending fascist world coup.

The tragic end to Azzarello’s life sheds light on the struggles he faced and the mental health issues he grappled with, leaving many questioning what could have been done to prevent such a devastating outcome.
