In a historic move, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution celebrating the global impact of soccer, also known as football, on society. The resolution, co-sponsored by over 160 countries, was met with enthusiastic applause from diplomats in the assembly chamber.

Libya’s U.N. Ambassador Taher El-Sonni, who introduced the resolution, emphasized the universal appeal of soccer as the world’s most popular sport. He highlighted how soccer transcends borders and brings people together, promoting values of mutual understanding, tolerance, respect, and solidarity.

El-Sonni underscored the pivotal role of soccer in championing gender equality and social inclusion, noting its ability to serve as a platform for individuals from diverse backgrounds to converge and connect. The resolution also recognized the importance of FIFA, regional and national soccer federations, and other relevant associations in promoting the game worldwide.

Furthermore, the resolution urged all countries to support soccer and other sports as tools for promoting peace, development, and the empowerment of women and girls. It called for the adoption of policies and programs to encourage participation in football and other physical activities.

On May 25, the resolution invites nations, U.N. bodies, international organizations, academia, civil society, and the private sector to observe World Football Day and raise awareness about the benefits of soccer for all. This groundbreaking resolution marks a significant step towards harnessing the power of sports to foster unity and positive social change on a global scale.
