Mayor LaToya Cantrell of New Orleans has once again taken to the skies, this time jetting off to Qatar to participate in an economic forum, as confirmed by her office on Saturday. This trip comes hot on the heels of her recent visit to Canada, showcasing the mayor’s commitment to engaging with global partners and fostering relationships on an international scale.
Accompanied by mayors from Michigan and Florida, Mayor Cantrell made her way to Doha to attend the prestigious Qatar Economic Forum. The delegation was also joined by U.S. Ambassador to Qatar, Timmy Davis, who has been instrumental in strengthening the ties between New Orleans and Qatar. Ambassador Davis, a native of New Orleans, has been a key figure in promoting cultural exchange between the two regions, including hosting Qatar’s first-ever Mardi Gras celebration last year.
The significance of Qatar’s support for New Orleans cannot be understated, with the oil-rich country contributing $100 million to infrastructure projects through the Qatar Katrina Fund. Additionally, Qatar has generously donated $12 million to Xavier University and $5 million to Tulane University’s Community Health Center, further solidifying the bond between the two regions.
During her visit, Mayor Cantrell also engaged in discussions regarding the hosting of major sports events, particularly as Super Bowl LIX approaches. With Doha set to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the exchange of experiences and insights between the two cities is invaluable in ensuring the success of such large-scale events.
While details about the duration of Mayor Cantrell’s trip were not immediately disclosed, her visit to Qatar follows her recent participation in a climate summit in Montreal. Addressing the pressing issue of climate change, Mayor Cantrell emphasized the importance of collective action in mitigating its impact on communities worldwide.
This trip to Qatar marks yet another international venture for Mayor Cantrell, who has visited at least eight foreign countries across four continents during her tenure. From the United Arab Emirates to Cuba, Ghana to the British Virgin Islands, Mayor Cantrell’s global outreach efforts highlight her commitment to representing New Orleans on the world stage.
In light of past criticism for using city funds for flight upgrades, Mayor Cantrell has pledged to cover all future upgrades herself on both domestic and international trips. This commitment to fiscal responsibility underscores her dedication to serving the interests of the city and its residents.
As Mayor Cantrell continues to engage with global partners and explore opportunities for collaboration, her presence at the Qatar Economic Forum exemplifies her proactive approach to economic development and international relations. With a focus on building bridges and fostering mutual understanding, Mayor Cantrell’s diplomatic efforts are poised to yield long-term benefits for the city of New Orleans.
