The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) recently organized a 5 km marathon, “Run for Democracy,” in an effort to boost voter awareness and increase electoral participation ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The event, which took place at Vegas Mall in Dwarka, saw enthusiastic participation from residents across the city.
According to a statement released by the civic body, the marathon was a key part of MCD’s initiative to engage the community and encourage citizens to exercise their democratic rights in the elections scheduled for 25th May 2024. The event not only highlighted the importance of voting but also promoted a spirit of health and fitness among participants.
Badal Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of the Najafgarh Zone where the marathon was held, expressed satisfaction with the successful completion of the event. He emphasized the importance of voter awareness, especially in areas like Dwarka and Matiala Assembly Constituencies, which had witnessed a decline in voter turnout in recent years.
In addition to organizing the marathon, MCD has also collaborated with various market associations, guest house associations, malls, and eateries to offer “democracy discounts” to electors who show the ink mark on their finger, indicating that they have voted. These efforts are part of MCD’s broader strategy to increase voter participation across all 12 zones in Delhi.
Overall, the “Run for Democracy” marathon was a successful initiative that not only raised awareness about the importance of voting but also promoted a healthy and active lifestyle among participants.
