McFarquhar and Schlenner spearhead growth of gymnastics team | Latest News, Sports, and Employment opportunities

The Marshall gymnastics team had a successful 2023-24 season, despite a smaller roster of only 10 gymnasts compared to the previous season’s 19. Head coach Sam Nielsen, a former team member herself, led the team to continued growth and success.

One standout gymnast from the team was senior Cameen McFarquhar, who qualified for the state tournament as an individual. Nielsen reflected on the bittersweet experience of coaching former teammates and watching them grow both as gymnasts and individuals.

The team’s success this season was attributed to increased practice time in the offseason and enhanced team bonding activities. With a smaller group, the gymnasts had more individualized coaching and built better team chemistry.

Seniors Jocelyn Schlenner and McFarquhar were instrumental in the team’s growth, pushing each other to improve every day. McFarquhar aimed to qualify for the All-Around competition at the state tournament and ultimately qualified for the beam and uneven bars events.

Schlenner also made significant contributions to the team, posting season-best scores and serving as a team captain. With McFarquhar and Schlenner graduating, the team will look to next year’s seniors and underclassmen to continue their success.
