West Liberty University wrestler Ty McGeary has added another impressive accolade to his already stellar career by being named the NCAA Division II National Wrestler of the Year for 2024. The junior standout, who recently clinched his second consecutive national title at 184 pounds with a perfect 33-0 record, received the prestigious honor from the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
McGeary, a native of McDonald, Pa., made history as the first wrestler from West Liberty University to earn the title of National Wrestler of the Year. His coach, Danny Irwin, praised McGeary for his exceptional performance on the mat, highlighting his dedication to the sport and his academic pursuits as a double major in cyber security and accounting.
The talented wrestler’s dominance was evident throughout the season, with only one takedown surrendered and a series of impressive victories leading to his national championship win. McGeary expressed his gratitude for the recognition, attributing his success to hard work and determination.
Looking ahead, McGeary plans to utilize his final year of eligibility at West Liberty University to pursue a third national title while pursuing a master’s degree in business. His remarkable career includes a 97-6 record, two national titles, three All-American honors, and multiple conference championships.
Among the finalists for the NCAA Division II National Wrestler of the Year award were standout wrestlers from various weight classes and regions, showcasing the depth of talent in collegiate wrestling.
