Northwest Missouri State University Receives Gold Designation from Exercise is Medicine

Northwest Missouri State University has been recognized by Exercise is Medicine (EIM) for its outstanding efforts in promoting a culture of wellness on campus. The university is one of 145 institutions worldwide to receive this honor, earning a gold-level designation from the Exercise is Medicine On Campus (EIM-OC) program.

Dr. Tina Gaa Pulley, an assistant professor of health and physical education at Northwest, leads the university’s Exercise is Medicine initiative. She emphasized the importance of promoting physical activity as a vital sign of health and encouraging collaboration among faculty, staff, and students to improve the overall well-being of the campus community.

The EIM-OC program, a community-impact initiative of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), awarded gold designations to 83 campuses globally. Northwest’s commitment to making movement a part of daily campus culture aligns with the goals of Exercise is Medicine, which aims to assess physical activity at every student health visit and provide tools for healthy habits.

By signing a proclamation to adopt Exercise is Medicine On Campus last October, Northwest joined a network of colleges and universities dedicated to enhancing health and wellness through physical activity. The university offers students various opportunities to participate in recreation activities, including at the Robert and Virginia Foster Fitness Center and through Campus Recreation programs.

Dr. Pulley and her colleagues at the School of Health Science and Wellness are leading the charge to ensure that every Northwest student graduates with improved health and fitness. The university’s gold recognition reflects its commitment to promoting physical activity and fostering a culture of well-being on campus.

Exercise is Medicine launched its recognition program in 2014 to honor campuses that prioritize physical activity and health promotion. Northwest’s dedication to integrating physical activity into daily campus life sets a positive example for other institutions and underscores the importance of making movement a standard in healthcare practices.
