Wayne State University Medical Student Wins Top Honors at Global Health Conference

Arielle Wenokur, a medical student at Wayne State University, Class of 2025, made waves at the Consortium of Universities for Global Health’s annual meeting in Los Angeles. Wenokur, who is pursuing a medical degree with a scholarly concentration in global health, took home the top prize in the Lancet Global Health Best Student Poster Competition within the Global Health Education category.

Her winning poster, titled “Assessing Knowledge of Global Healthcare Systems in Medical Education,” delved into the analysis of medical student knowledge of global health care systems. The project compared students who attended a lecture series on the topic, those with previous global health education or experience, and those with no exposure at all.

The results revealed that students who attended the lecture series had greater knowledge, while those with previous education or experience exhibited more confidence in their knowledge. Wenokur emphasized the importance of incorporating global health care system education into the medical student curriculum, citing literature that supports the idea that global health education produces more competent physicians.

The Global Health Concentration at Wayne State University’s School of Medicine is part of the Global and Urban Health Equity certificate program, designed to enhance students’ understanding of global health issues. The Office of Medical Student Research Programs, which supports students in scholarly projects and research, is just one example of the university’s commitment to providing opportunities for student success.
