Smitha Gireesh, a mother of a 10-year-old boy named Ishan who faces communication disorders, has been tirelessly advocating for better treatment and opportunities for children with special needs and their mothers. Despite facing numerous challenges in her own life, Smitha has managed to juggle caring for Ishan, pursuing her writing career, and fighting for the rights of mothers in similar situations.
Smitha’s journey began with the birth of Ishan, who initially appeared to be a perfect bundle of joy. However, as he grew older, Smitha noticed signs of communication difficulties and hyperactivity. Forced to give up her dream job in the judicial services to care for Ishan, Smitha faced criticism and blame from others for her son’s condition. Undeterred, she turned to writing as a way to cope with the challenges she faced.
Writing three books on her mobile phone with Ishan by her side, Smitha found solace and purpose in sharing her experiences with others. Her fourth book is set to be released soon, showcasing her incredible achievement as a writer who only began her career after the age of 40. Despite the demands of caring for Ishan, Smitha managed to find time to write and publish her works, including ‘Bohemian Republic’, ‘Kottayam Diary’, and ‘Swapnamezhuthukari’.
In 2019, Ishan was enrolled in a special school in Kunnamkulam, where Smitha spent her days tending to his needs. It was during this time that she wrote ‘Kottayam Diaries’, a book filled with anecdotes from her life in Kottayam and the people she met there. Through her writing, Smitha has been able to create a vibrant world for herself and Ishan, providing a glimpse into their unique journey.
Smitha’s advocacy extends beyond her own experiences to the struggles faced by mothers of children with special needs. She highlights the lack of social life, career opportunities, and support systems available to these mothers, emphasizing the need for better treatment and education for their children. Smitha believes that with the right support, mothers in similar situations can pursue their own happiness and create fulfilling lives for themselves and their children.
Despite the challenges she has faced, Smitha remains determined to make a difference in the lives of children with special needs and their mothers. With the support of her family and her unwavering dedication to her cause, Smitha continues to be a voice for those who often go unheard. Through her writing, advocacy, and social media presence, Smitha is paving the way for a more inclusive and supportive society for all.
