Meeting between NYSERDA Chief and Long Island Business Leaders

Doreen Harris, president and CEO of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, recently met with 80 business leaders on Long Island to discuss the state’s transition to renewable energy. The meeting, hosted by the Long Island Association’s Energy & Environment Committee, focused on efforts to achieve New York State’s goals under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.

During the meeting, Harris emphasized the importance of Long Island’s support and innovative spirit in leading the nation towards clean energy goals. Long Island has already made significant strides in the offshore wind industry, with projects like South Fork Wind and provisional contracts for Sunrise Wind and Empire Wind.

Despite some setbacks, including the cancellation of three offshore wind projects due to technical and commercial complexities, Governor Kathy Hochul announced a $200 million supportive manufacturing and logistics RFP to grow the domestic offshore wind supply chain in New York. Additionally, a request for information will inform the development of New York’s fifth offshore wind project solicitation.

Matt Cohen, LIA president and CEO, expressed support for decarbonizing the energy mix on Long Island and highlighted the economic and job creation benefits that come with it. The LIA’s Energy and Environment Committee continues to advocate for comprehensive solutions to address the energy and environmental needs of Long Island, promoting a greener economy and inclusive energy landscape for all New Yorkers.
