Men’s Tennis Loses to UNCW in CAA Championship Final

In a thrilling showdown at the CAA championship match, the Elon University men’s tennis team put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell short against No. 1 seeded and nationally ranked UNCW. The Phoenix completed their season with a 16-8 record, marking their third consecutive appearance in the CAA title match.

Despite their best efforts, UNCW, ranked No. 52 in the ITA rankings, emerged victorious with a 4-1 win. This victory secured the Seahawks their fourth consecutive CAA championship title and earned them the conference’s automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament.

The match saw intense competition, with the Seahawks taking the doubles point early on. Elon’s Oskar Antinheimo and Jack Curtis fought hard in the doubles, showcasing their teamwork and determination. Dylan Heap of Elon managed to secure a crucial victory on Court 6, tying the match at 1-1.

However, UNCW’s strong performance in singles matches ultimately led to their triumph, with wins on Courts 3 and 5 propelling them to a 3-1 lead. The Seahawks sealed the deal with a victory at the No. 1 spot, clinching the CAA championship title.

The match also marked the end of head coach Michael Leonard’s illustrious career with Elon, as he bid farewell after 20 seasons with the program. Leonard’s legacy includes 300 victories and three NCAA Tournament appearances, leaving a lasting impact on the Phoenix tennis program.
