Mercury Research reports that AMD increased its market share in important processor categories during the first quarter.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has made significant gains in the x86 processor market, according to a recent report by market researcher Mercury Research. The competition between AMD and Intel in the x86 processor market has always been fierce, with both companies vying for market share.

In the first quarter of this year, AMD saw gains in both the client and server categories, excluding IoT and semi-custom products. This marks a continued trend for AMD, with on-quarter and on-year gains in both segments. On the other hand, Intel gained some share in the IoT market.

Analyst Dean McCarron noted that x86 processor shipments in the first quarter followed typical seasonal trends, with all segments experiencing moderate declines. This quarter marked the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic that market results have been completely normal in the desktop, mobile, and server segments.

However, AMD faced challenges in the IoT/SoC processor shipments, with a significant decline due to decreased console demand impacting AMD’s SoC shipments. Despite this, AMD remains optimistic about its future performance, with expectations of annual comparisons being down in the second quarter and the second half of 2024.

Overall, AMD continues to dominate the x86 processor market, with gains in both client and server segments. While Intel saw gains in mobile client shipments, AMD’s strength in the desktop segment led to a significant increase in market share for the first quarter.
