Reading Time: 2 minutes

Screen icon Meryl Streep is set to receive an honorary Palme d’Or at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival on May 14, marking a significant milestone in her illustrious career. The 74-year-old actress, known for her exceptional talent and versatility, has garnered a record 21 Oscar nominations and three wins throughout her time in Hollywood.

Streep’s impressive filmography includes a wide range of iconic roles in modern classics such as “The Deer Hunter,” “Out of Africa,” and “Kramer vs Kramer,” as well as beloved family favorites like “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Mamma Mia!” Her recent performances, including portraying the US President in “Don’t Look Up” (2021) and the struggling actress Loretta Durkin in “Only Murders in the Building” (2021-present), continue to showcase her unparalleled acting prowess.

Despite her numerous accolades and global recognition, Streep has only graced the Cannes Film Festival once before, back in 1989 when she won the best actress award for her role in “A Cry in the Dark.” This year, she will be honored with the prestigious Palme d’Or, joining a select group of esteemed artists who have received this esteemed award.

In response to the news of her upcoming recognition, Streep expressed her gratitude and humility, stating, “I am immeasurably honored to receive the news of this prestigious award. To win a prize at Cannes, for the international community of artists has always represented the highest achievement in the art of filmmaking. To stand in the shadow of those who have previously been honored is humbling and thrilling in equal part.”

The Cannes Film Festival, known for showcasing the best of international cinema, will also feature other Hollywood veterans this year, including “Star Wars” creator George Lucas, who will receive a lifetime achievement award at the closing ceremony. Festival organizers praised Streep for her enduring impact on the film industry, stating, “Because she has spanned almost 50 years of cinema and embodied countless masterpieces, Meryl Streep is part of our collective imagination, our shared love of cinema.”

In addition to Streep, legendary Japanese animators Studio Ghibli will also be honored with an honorary Palme d’Or, marking the first time the award will be presented to a group rather than an individual. This recognition highlights the significant contributions of Studio Ghibli to the world of animation and storytelling.

The Palme d’Or is considered the most prestigious award at the Cannes Film Festival, symbolizing excellence and innovation in filmmaking. It is regarded as one of the most coveted prizes in the industry, recognizing outstanding talent and creativity in the world of cinema.

As the anticipation builds for the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival on May 14, all eyes will be on Meryl Streep as she receives this well-deserved honor, solidifying her legacy as one of the greatest actors of our time. Her remarkable career and unparalleled talent continue to inspire and captivate audiences around the world, making her a true icon in the world of cinema.
