Meta to discontinue Workplace app in order to shift focus towards AI and the metaverse | World News

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, has announced the discontinuation of its work-focused Workplace app as it shifts its focus towards building artificial intelligence and metaverse technologies. The enterprise communications app, Workplace, was first introduced for businesses in 2016, offering features such as multi-company groups and shared spaces for collaboration.

Starting June 2026, Workplace will be shuttered for customers, but Meta will continue to use it as its internal messaging board until August 2025. Users will have the option to transition to Zoom’s Workvivo product, Meta’s preferred migration partner, over the next two years.

The decision to discontinue Workplace comes as Meta Platforms invests heavily in AI products and the metaverse, a shared virtual environment believed to be the successor to the mobile internet. The company aims to reshape the way people work by focusing on these emerging technologies.

Despite the discontinuation of Workplace, billing and payment arrangements for customers will remain the same until August this year. Workplace currently offers a monthly core plan of $4 per user, with the option to upgrade with add-ons starting from $2 per user each month. The monthly bill is calculated based on the number of billable users unless an organization has a fixed plan in place.
