Michigan group launches initiative to spark political debates starting with US Senate race

A coalition of Michigan groups, including the Detroit Economic Club, Oakland University, and others, have joined forces to address the recent decline in political debates by forming the Michigan Debate Task Force. The task force aims to arrange more debates, starting with this year’s campaign for the state’s open U.S. Senate seat.

The Michigan Debate Task Force has reached out to the seven major party candidates running for the Senate seat, informing them that the winners of the Democratic and Republican primaries will be invited to participate in three debates across the state in September and October. Third-party candidates or independents on the November ballot may also participate if they meet certain conditions.

The task force’s schedule includes debates in Grand Rapids, Traverse City, and metro Detroit, strategically planned to reach voters before key election milestones. Several state media organizations have endorsed the task force’s efforts to host debates focused on regional and statewide issues.

Dave Dulio, director of the Center for Civic Engagement at Oakland University, emphasized the importance of providing voters with unfiltered access to candidates. The task force aims to increase the frequency of debates and involve a neutral party to ensure fair and informative discussions.

The initiative begins with the U.S. Senate race, featuring prominent candidates from both Democratic and Republican parties. With the potential to impact majority control of the U.S. Senate, the race is expected to be closely contested, making the debates crucial for voters to make informed decisions.
