Microsoft is creating a new AI model, MAI-1, to improve in-house LLM capabilities, reports My Mobile India.

Microsoft is making waves in the AI world with the development of its new AI model, MAI-1. Led by former DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman, this model is set to be larger than any previous models created by the tech giant, boasting approximately 500 billion parameters.

Despite already investing over $10 billion into OpenAI, Microsoft is not resting on its laurels. The company is focused on enhancing its internal AI capabilities with the ambitious MAI-1 project. Suleyman, who previously founded his own AI firm called Inflection, is now spearheading the development of MAI-1 at Microsoft.

Reports suggest that MAI-1 is being built from the ground up by Microsoft’s teams, utilizing some data and technologies from Inflection but not simply rebranding existing AI models. The sheer size of MAI-1 means it will require powerful hardware and significant resources for training.

Microsoft’s decision to invest in MAI-1 despite existing partnerships with AI firms like OpenAI and Mistral may be a strategic move to solidify its position in the AI landscape, especially in light of regulatory scrutiny. The model’s 500 billion parameters and advanced training requirements indicate Microsoft’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI technology.
