A man from Middlesbrough, Ian Mawson, is on a mission to walk the circumference of the Earth and is now inviting others to join him for the final mile of his decade-long journey. At 75 years old, Mr. Mawson is set to celebrate his 24,901st mile on 1 June and hopes to raise money for children in poverty during his final few miles.
Mr. Mawson’s passion for walking began in 2015 when he started using a smartwatch to track his daily steps. Almost a decade later, he is just 300 miles away from completing his quest to circumnavigate the globe. He walks 10 miles before breakfast each day and plans to finish his monumental task on Wednesday 12 June at Middlesbrough’s Albert Park, where he hopes to be joined by others.
Despite facing challenges like walking in the rain and cold, Mr. Mawson finds joy in his daily treks and is determined to help children in need. Any money raised will go towards providing financial support and essentials for children through schools and community organizations.
“As a school governor, I am well aware of the financial struggles some families endure on a daily basis, just to meet their and their children’s basic needs,” Mr. Mawson said. “Every child has an absolute right to a secure and joyful childhood, and together we can help make that happen.”
Mr. Mawson’s inspiring journey serves as a reminder of the power of determination and the impact one person can have in making a difference in the lives of others.
