Mike Brown exposes what cameras didn’t capture after instructing Dustin Poirier to avoid using guillotines at UFC 299

Dustin Poirier, the UFC lightweight contender, is known for his relentless pursuit of the guillotine choke, despite the warnings of his coaches. At UFC 299, Poirier ignored his coach’s advice to stop going for the submission, insisting that he could hit it. His coach, Mike Brown, described him as a “crazy bastard” for his determination.

Although Poirier has never finished a fight with a guillotine choke in the octagon, his coach attests to his effectiveness with the technique in the gym. Brown recalls a fight with Dan Hooker where Poirier’s love for the submission had him on the edge of his seat, as Poirier battled back from a two-round deficit by attempting guillotines.

Poirier’s next opportunity to showcase his guillotine choke comes at UFC 302 on June 1, where he will face lightweight champion Islam Makhachev in the main event. Brown believes it would be poetic if Poirier were to win the title with a guillotine choke, especially after his near-successful attempt against Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2019.

Despite never capturing the UFC lightweight title, Brown sees Poirier as a champion in his eyes, acknowledging his contributions to the sport. As Poirier prepares to face Makhachev, fans eagerly anticipate whether his signature guillotine choke will finally lead him to championship glory.
