The South African Military Academy has officially launched the Defence Artificial Intelligence Research Unit (DAIRU) as a hub of Artificial Intelligence (AI) excellence, marking a significant milestone for the country’s military advancement and national security.

Artificial Intelligence is recognized as a crucial element of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, with the potential to reshape geopolitics and warfare. The integration of AI technologies into defence operations is seen as essential for future conflicts, as nations strive to stay ahead in the global race for AI supremacy.

During the launch ceremony on Friday, Mondli Gungubele, Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, highlighted the strategic importance of leveraging AI for national development and security. He emphasized the transformative power of AI and its capacity to revolutionize various sectors, positioning South Africa as a leader in harnessing emerging technologies for global competitiveness.

Lieutenant General Michael Ramantswana, South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Chief of Staff, underscored the importance of innovation in AI solutions and collaboration with industry and academia for the success of the DAIRU. The initiative aims to enhance the SANDF’s operational efficiency, cyber resilience, and border security, while also preparing for digital warfare in the modern military landscape.

The establishment of the DAIRU reflects South Africa’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological innovation in Africa and beyond, as the country navigates the complexities of AI governance and regulation in the global digital arms race. The initiative signals a proactive approach to embracing AI advancements and leveraging them for national defense and socio-economic growth.
