The American Heart Association is gearing up for National Walking Day on April 3, inviting communities across the country to join in on the movement. With the organization celebrating its Centennial this year, the focus is on encouraging people to get moving and raise awareness of the benefits of physical activity.
According to the American Heart Association, at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week is recommended to lower the risk of diseases, strengthen bones and muscles, improve mental health, and reduce the risk of depression. Staying active can have a positive impact on overall health and well-being.
Milwaukee American Heart Association board member Cindy Milgram emphasized the importance of taking steps, big or small, to improve the health of communities. National Walking Day serves as a reminder of the progress that can be made when individuals come together to prioritize their health.
To participate in National Walking Day, individuals are encouraged to gather friends, family, colleagues, or pets for a walk on a route of their choice. By using the hashtag #WalkingDay and tagging @American Heart Association– Wisconsin on social media, participants can engage with the organization and share their commitment to movement.
