Miners’ softball team delivers double blow with sweeps over Gremlins and Bulldogs on Wednesday

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Hancock Driving Park was the site of an intense softball showdown on Wednesday afternoon as the Negaunee Miners faced off against both the Houghton Gremlins and the Hancock Bulldogs. Despite less than ideal weather conditions, the Miners managed to come out on top in both games, showcasing their resilience and skill on the field.

In the first game against the Gremlins, Negaunee pitcher Grace Nardi went head-to-head with Houghton’s Stella Soumis in a tight pitching duel. The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Maya Fredrickson of the Miners hit a solo home run, putting Negaunee on the board. Houghton quickly responded in the sixth inning, tying the game at 1-1. However, it was the Miners who ultimately secured the win in the final inning with a walk-off run, clinching a 2-1 victory.

In the second game against the Bulldogs, which was a continuation of a rain-suspended game from the previous day, Negaunee jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The Miners’ strong pitching and solid hitting propelled them to a 9-2 win over Hancock, showcasing their dominance on the field.

Despite the losses, both Houghton and Hancock coaches praised their teams for their efforts and resilience in the face of tough competition. Looking ahead, the Bulldogs are hoping to schedule one more game before the playoffs, while the Gremlins will wrap up their season with a matchup against Ishpeming.

Overall, the games at the Hancock Driving Park were a testament to the talent and determination of the teams involved, setting the stage for an exciting end to the softball season.
