Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno Urges Tourists to Prioritize Decarbonization and Sustainability

In a bid to promote sustainable tourism practices, Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno has called on tourists to prioritize aspects of decarbonization and sustainability while traveling. Speaking at a weekly press conference in Jakarta on Earth Day, Uno emphasized the importance of reducing carbon emissions and practicing sustainable waste handling.

Uno highlighted the significance of joining activities such as mangrove and coral reef planting to offset carbon emissions. He also advocated for the promotion of electric vehicles as a mode of transportation for travel to achieve carbon-free tourism.

The ministry has been actively involved in various initiatives to support Earth protection, including offsetting carbon emissions, planting mangrove forests, restoring coral reefs, and addressing food waste issues. Additionally, the tourism village program aims to empower local communities through the application of local wisdom and customs, creating quality job opportunities in the sector.

Minister Uno expressed his vision of presenting Indonesian destinations as close to nature, culture, and full of adventure, emphasizing tranquility, spirituality, and sustainability as key attractions. Apart from popular destinations like Bali, efforts are underway to develop the new capital IKN Nusantara as a sustainable tourist destination, prioritizing interconnectivity based on nature sustainability.

The ministry’s participation in the UN General Assembly Sustainability Week in New York showcased Indonesia’s commitment to sustainable tourism development. With a focus on decarbonization and sustainability, Minister Uno is leading efforts to transform the tourism sector into a more environmentally friendly and responsible industry.
