The Minot Minotauros hockey team is a melting pot of cultures and languages, with players from around the world coming together to compete on the ice. With players hailing from Slovakia, Sweden, Finland, and Canada, communication on and off the ice can be a challenge.
Head coach Cody Campbell shared that the players use a variety of languages to communicate, from Slovak to Swedish to Canadian French. Despite the language barriers, the team has found ways to connect and work together towards their common goal of winning games.
The team’s diversity is a point of pride for Campbell, who emphasized the importance of recruiting the best players regardless of where they come from. The international players bring a unique perspective to the game and help broaden the team’s world view.
Adjusting to the differences in ice rink sizes has been a challenge for some of the European players, who are used to larger rinks in their home countries. However, with time and practice, they are adapting to the faster-paced style of play in the United States.
One thing that unites the players is their connection to the Minot community. Living with host families during the season, the players become honorary members of the community and form lasting bonds with their billet families. The hospitality and care shown by the Minot community leave a lasting impact on the players, shaping their experience both on and off the ice.
As the regular season comes to a close, the Minotauros are gearing up for the playoffs, with their final home game scheduled for April 12th at the Maysa Arena. The team’s international flair and camaraderie will be on full display as they compete for a shot at the championship.
