Missouri Museum Breaks World Record for Largest Gathering of People Wearing Underwear on Their Heads

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The City Museum in St. Louis, Missouri, made headlines recently for breaking a Guinness World Record in a quirky and fun way. The museum, known for its unique and artist-built playground, decided to commemorate “314 Day” this year with a bang by attempting to achieve yet another Guinness World Record title.

On March 14, the museum hosted an event where they aimed to bring in 314 people to gather and wear underwear on their heads for one minute. Katy Enrique, the director of sales and marketing at the museum, shared with Fox News Digital that the inspiration for this record attempt came from the museum’s iconic giant underwear that hangs in Beatnik Bob’s Café.

Before this attempt, the City Museum already held four other Guinness World Records, including the World’s Largest Pencil, World’s Largest Seesaw, World’s Largest Tennis Racket, and World’s Tallest Man. The museum also boasts owning the World’s Largest Pair of Underwear, which served as the inspiration for this latest record-breaking endeavor.

The giant underwear on display at the museum was created in 1996 by St. Louis-based artists Pat Eby and Ann Paidrick, with a 16-foot waistband. While it may not hold the title for the world’s largest underwear (that record is held by Cottonil in Egypt with an 82-foot waistband), it certainly captured the attention of visitors and participants alike.

Guinness World Records confirmed that on March 14, the City Museum successfully achieved the title for hosting the world’s largest gathering of people with underwear on their heads, with a total of 355 participants at the event. This accomplishment added another feather to the museum’s cap and further solidified its reputation as a place for unique and memorable experiences.

Enrique highlighted that the museum’s motto of encouraging people to explore, crawl, slide, climb, swing, and get lost in the museum perfectly aligned with the spirit of this Guinness World Record attempt. The 355 pairs of underwear worn by participants during the event are now proudly displayed in Beatnik Bob’s Café, alongside the giant underwear that sparked the idea for the record-breaking gathering.

Since its opening in 1997, the City Museum has evolved from a passion project into a hub for adventure-seekers, offering indoor, outdoor, and underground playgrounds for visitors to enjoy. Housed in an old shoe factory, the museum continues to engage the community through various events throughout the year, such as City Nights, July Fest, the International Craft Beer Festival, and Fright at the Museum.

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the museum is showing appreciation for those who have served or are currently serving in the military by offering free admission to all active and retired service members from Friday, May 24 through Monday, May 27. This gesture reflects the museum’s commitment to honoring and involving the community in its ongoing adventures and celebrations.
