MMA community comes together to support Brazil after devastating floods leave hundreds of cities submerged

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The MMA community has rallied together in support of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, as the state faces a historic flood that has devastated hundreds of cities since late April. With 95 confirmed deaths and hundreds still missing, the situation is dire with over 100,000 houses damaged or destroyed, leaving more than 200,000 people homeless. The local government estimates nearly a billion dollars in damages so far.

The excessive rainfall between April 22 and May 6 led to the flooding of the Guaiba lake, causing it to invade numerous cities, including the state capital Porto Alegre. Major landmarks like the Gigantinho gymnasium, which hosted a UFC event in 2015, are now surrounded by water, along with soccer stadiums and hundreds of buildings and roads.

In response to the crisis, fighters at UFC 301 in Rio de Janeiro used their post-fight interviews to urge their fellow countrymen to come together and help the victims. Many have taken to social media to announce donations, while coaches and fighters from around the world are hosting seminars in exchange for food and aid.

Thiago Meller, a one-time Bellator veteran and martial arts instructor near Porto Alegre, described the devastation as akin to a war zone. Despite his own home being intact, his in-laws lost everything to the floodwaters. Many martial arts gyms have opened their doors to shelter the homeless, showcasing the solidarity and compassion within the MMA community during this challenging time.

As the waters slowly recede, the road to recovery for Rio Grande do Sul will be long and arduous. International donations can be made through various channels, including the Brazil Foundation, crowdfunding campaigns, and the state’s official website, to support the rebuilding efforts in the region.
