Moab businesses experience successful beginning to tourist season

After a period of uncertainty due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on travel, business owners in Moab, Utah are reporting a strong start to the 2024 tourist season. The week of Easter Jeep Safari, which took place from March 23–31, provided a much-needed boost to local businesses.

Chile Pepper Bike Shop manager Phillip Martin described Easter weekend as a great start, noting that business has been more consistent throughout March. Hoteliers in the area also reported a busy week during the Easter Jeep Safari, with Brian Hunnings of Red Cliffs Lodge and Rebecca Monceaux of Element Moab both noting a strong start to the season.

Despite challenges in the post-pandemic tourism market, including a decline in tax revenues and occupancy rates in recent years, Moab is seeing a resurgence in tourism. Ben Fredregill, Grand County Economic Development Director, highlighted the competitive nature of the tourism industry and the challenges faced by destinations like Moab.

While international travel has yet to fully rebound, local businesses are optimistic about the upcoming season. Michael Miller of Dewey’s Restaurant and Bar noted that mild weather has been beneficial for business, and other business owners reported positive forecasts for the year ahead.

Overall, business owners in Moab are feeling optimistic about the 2024 tourist season, with a sense of cautious optimism and a belief that the outdoor industry is stabilizing after the challenges of the past few years. Despite lingering concerns, the general feeling is one of positivity and hope for a successful year ahead.
