Moderate Greek conservatives poised for victory in EU elections

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a surprising turn of events, the local EPP affiliates of New Democracy in Greece are defying the trend of ruling parties across the EU by topping the polls in the upcoming European elections. Despite being one of the few ruling parties expected to maintain their popularity, the current centre-right government in Greece, led by Prime Minister Kiriakos Mitsotakis, is exceeding expectations.

According to the Euronews superpoll, Nea Demokratia, the European People Party’s political affiliate in Greece, is leading the polls among Greek citizens. This success is a stark contrast to the struggles faced by other ruling parties in Europe, who are predicted to see losses in the upcoming elections.

The moderate conservatives of Nea Demokratia are significantly ahead of their leftist and centre-left rivals, with Syriza and PASOK trailing behind in second and third place, respectively. The distance between Nea Demokratia and Syriza is more than 20 percent, highlighting the dominance of the centre-right party in the polls.

The political landscape in Greece is further complicated by the presence of the Greek Communist Party, KKE, as a minority dark horse in the election race. The fragmented left spectrum in Greece is reflected in the representation of different parties in the EU parliament, with Syriza, PASOK, and KKE belonging to different political groups.

As the European elections draw near, the success of Nea Demokratia in Greece is defying expectations and setting the party up for a strong showing in the EU parliament. With the support of Greek citizens and a lead in the polls, Nea Demokratia is poised to secure a significant number of seats in the European Parliament, solidifying their position as a dominant political force in Greece.
