Monica McNutt’s Basketball Journey: From the DMV to MSG

Monica McNutt, a former Georgetown basketball player turned sports journalist, is using her platform this Women’s History Month to share her journey from the court to the newsroom. In a candid interview with Commanders.com, McNutt reflects on her passion for sports and journalism that has shaped her career.

From a young age, basketball was more than just a game for McNutt. Inspired by the rise of the WNBA and the powerful women athletes she saw on TV, she found her voice and strength on the court. Georgetown, with its rich basketball history and Black woman head coach, became the perfect fit for her collegiate career.

It was during her time at Georgetown that a conversation with the sports information director sparked her interest in media. Embracing the challenge, McNutt dove headfirst into sports journalism, determined to tell authentic stories from her own experiences in the game.

Despite facing setbacks and uncertainties in the competitive media industry, McNutt persevered. Opportunities at the University of Maryland’s Merrill College of Journalism and local news stations helped her build her career and stay connected to her roots in the DMV area.

Today, as a basketball journalist, McNutt sees her job as a privilege and a responsibility. She strives to humanize athletes on and off the court, respecting their stories and representing women and Black individuals in the sports conversation.

Looking back on her journey from a young girl with a love for basketball to a respected sports journalist, McNutt is grateful for the opportunities the game has brought her. She remains committed to using her platform to uplift and empower others, never taking for granted the impact she can have in the world of sports journalism.
