Montgomery’s Cooper Roman’s hard work paid off in a big way during Monday’s District 4 playoff game against Northwest. The freshman second baseman went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two stolen bases, helping lead Montgomery to an 8-0 victory in the quarterfinals.
Roman’s dedication to improving his hitting paid dividends as he sparked the offense and played error-less defense. His performance, along with strong pitching from Briar Persing, Parker Bennett, and Parker Persing, secured Montgomery’s first playoff win since 2019 and their first ever as a Class AA team.
Coach Tim Persing praised Roman’s work ethic and performance, highlighting his key hits and role as a second lead-off hitter in the lineup. Roman’s contributions, along with the stellar pitching from the Montgomery trio, ensured a comfortable victory and kept all pitchers available for the upcoming semifinals.
The win was a long time coming for Montgomery, who had to wait out a rain delay before finally getting the chance to showcase their talent on the field. With five freshmen in the starting lineup, the team proved they were up for the challenge, gaining valuable playoff experience and setting the stage for future success.
As Montgomery looks ahead to the semifinals, they can take pride in their well-rounded performance and the contributions of young players like Cooper Roman, who exemplified the team’s hard-working and determined spirit on the field.
