More than 1,380 Individuals Prosecuted in Connection to Jan. 6 Events

The investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack has become the largest criminal inquiry in Justice Department history, with federal prosecutors indicating that it is far from over. More than three years after the attack, the investigation continues to gain momentum, with new arrests and charges being announced every week.

According to prosecutors, a total of 2,000 to 2,500 individuals could ultimately face indictment for their roles in the attack. As of early this month, over 1,380 people have already been charged in connection with the events at the Capitol. The most common charges include illegal parading inside the Capitol, entering and remaining in a restricted federal area, and assaulting police officers.

Of the defendants, almost 800 have pleaded guilty, with about 250 pleading guilty to felony charges. Prosecutors have had success in court, winning the majority of cases that have gone to trial. Over 150 defendants have been convicted at trial, while only two have been fully acquitted.

More than 850 individuals have been sentenced so far, with approximately 520 receiving prison time. The harshest penalties have been reserved for the leaders of far-right extremist groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, who played significant roles in the attack. Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio was sentenced to 22 years in prison, while former Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes received an 18-year term.

The Capitol attack investigation continues to be a significant focus for the Justice Department, with prosecutors committed to holding all individuals involved accountable for their actions on that fateful day.
