A tram crash at a Universal Studios theme park in Southern California on Saturday night left 15 people injured, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s office. The incident occurred during a studio tour, with several passengers falling off the tram in the crash.
The theme park confirmed that the crash resulted in multiple minor injuries and stated that they are working to support the guests and understand the circumstances that led to the accident.
The crash took place during the World-Famous Studio Tour of the Universal backlot, with the four-car tram colliding with a metal guardrail after passing a “Jurassic Park” exhibit. The impact caused the last car to tilt and eject multiple passengers.
Authorities mentioned that there was an issue with the brakes, although the exact cause is still under investigation. Emergency responders were called to the scene around 9 p.m., and 15 tram passengers were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor to moderate injuries.
Aerial footage from KCAL-TV showed paramedics treating injured patrons and removing at least one on a stretcher. The tram at the theme park can hold over 100 people, and the tram tour is a popular attraction that takes patrons behind the scenes of iconic movie sets.
The California Highway Patrol will continue to investigate the crash, with drugs and alcohol not considered to be factors in the incident. The theme park, part of the Universal Studios complex in Universal City, will also be conducting its own investigation into the tram crash.
