The conviction of the killers of a 16-year-old Montreal teenager, Jannai Dopwell-Bailey, has brought some closure to his family, but the pain of his absence still lingers. Charla Dopwell, the mother of the slain teenager, expressed her feelings after the verdict was announced, saying, “Each night there is an empty chair at our dinner table. It will always be there as long as our family gathers for dinner.”

Jannai Dopwell-Bailey was stabbed to death in front of a Côte-des-Neiges school in October 2021. The recent conviction of Andrei Donet, 21, for second-degree murder in the killing, and another man, who was a minor at the time of the crime, has brought some justice to the family.

Charla Dopwell shared that she still sets a place for her son at the dinner table and prepares his favorite meals, even though he will never return to enjoy them. The trial was emotionally challenging for her as she had to relive the details of her son’s tragic death.

Despite the portrayal of her son as a gang member during the trial, Charla Dopwell vehemently denied those claims, stating that he was a student and not involved in any gang activity. The Crown argued that the killing was part of a conflict between two gangs in the area.

The sentencing for Donet is pending, with the jury recommending parole eligibility in 12 years. The family hopes for a tough sentence that reflects the gravity of the crime and the impact it has had on their lives. While justice has been served, the loss of their beloved son remains irreplaceable.
