Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano, has been captivating spectators with a stunning display of volcanic vortex rings in the sky. Since April 3, the “Mountain” in Sicily has been emitting near-perfect circles of vapour, a rare phenomenon that has left experts and onlookers in awe.
The recent activity follows the opening of a new crater on the southeastern summit of Mount Etna on April 2. These rings, created by the rapid release of gas and the shape of the vent, have been dubbed “volcanic vortex rings” by British physicist William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin.
Despite the mesmerizing nature of the rings, volcanologist Boris Behncke reassured the public that they are not a sign of an impending eruption. Instead, he explained that they are simply a result of gas being released in a pulsating manner through an open, circular vent.
