Narok Women Representative Rebecca Tonkei has thrown her support behind intern teachers demanding to be absorbed on permanent and pensionable terms by the government. Tonkei emphasized the hardships faced by these teachers and urged the State to convert them to permanent employees.
Highlighting the issue of low pay, Tonkei argued that the conversion to permanent terms would not only provide financial stability but also ensure that the teachers can meet their basic needs. She defended the internship program for teachers, stating that it is common in other public sectors as well.
In a related development, Marakwet West MP Toroitich Kipchumba criticized individuals who went to court to block the employment of intern teachers, a decision that was upheld by the court. Kipchumba, who is also a member of the Education Committee, called for more funds to be allocated to the Education Ministry in the upcoming financial year to confirm intern teachers and hire more educators.
While acknowledging the court’s decision, Kipchumba expressed disagreement with it and emphasized the importance of ensuring the permanent employment of intern teachers. The Education Committee is pushing for the appeal of the court’s decision to pave the way for the absorption of these teachers into the system.
