Michigan State University’s men’s tennis team standout, Ozan Baris, concluded a historic season with a bittersweet defeat in the NCAA Singles Championship semifinal on May 24. Despite a valiant effort, Baris fell short against Filip Planinsek of The University of Alabama in a closely contested match.
Baris, a sophomore and All-American, displayed his resilience by winning the first set 7-5 but ultimately lost the next two sets by the same score. Reflecting on the match, Baris expressed disappointment but remained optimistic about his future in the sport.
The Okemos native, known for his comeback abilities, acknowledged the mental toll of the defeat but quickly shifted his focus to his next steps. Baris, who has already made a mark in professional tennis, is contemplating his future at MSU, with coach Harry Jadun supporting his potential transition to the professional tour.
However, Baris believes there is unfinished business at MSU, aiming to elevate the program and leave a lasting legacy. His accolades this season, including being named Big Ten Player of the Year and achieving a top 25 ranking for the program, attest to his impact on the team.
Looking ahead, Baris is determined to continue his pursuit of championships, with plans to compete in professional tournaments during the offseason. His unwavering dedication and drive to succeed serve as an inspiration for future recruits and a testament to his commitment to excellence in collegiate tennis.
