Mumbai City FC Defeats the Gaurs in ISL 2023-24 Semifinal After a Long Battle

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Mumbai City FC created history with a stunning comeback against FC Goa in the first-leg Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 semifinal clash. Trailing 2-0, the Islanders scored three goals in seven minutes – 90, 90+1, 90+6 – becoming the first team in the competition’s history to do so in that timeframe. They also became the first side to score multiple goals in injury time of the second half of an ISL playoff game.

The hero of the match was Lallianzuala Chhangte, who scored two late goals to secure the victory for Mumbai. Chhangte, who won the AIFF Men’s Player of the Year award last season, continued his stellar form this season with nine goals and six assists. His performance in the semifinal clash was exceptional, with a shot conversion rate of 100% and the highest xG among all players.

Head coach Petr Kratky’s tactical genius also played a crucial role in the comeback. His substitutions of Gurkirat Singh and Jayesh Rane in the late stages of the game proved to be game-changers, with both players impacting all three goals scored by Mumbai.

Despite the late comeback, it is just a one-goal lead for Mumbai going into the second leg. The return fixture at the Mumbai Football Arena promises to be an exciting encounter, with both teams eager to secure a spot in the ISL final. Kratky emphasized the importance of maintaining a winning mentality and expressed confidence in his team’s ability to deliver another strong performance in the upcoming match.
