Mustangs make a comeback with sweep over St. Cloud | Latest News, Sports, Employment opportunities

The Southwest Minnesota State softball team had a dominant performance in their home opener against St. Cloud State on Saturday. In the first game of the doubleheader, the Mustangs rallied in the third inning to secure a 2-1 victory. Abby Russell’s go-ahead run, driven in by Jillian Noel’s RBI single, proved to be the difference maker. Pitcher Morgyn Otte held off the Huskies, allowing just one run on five hits.

In the second game, the Mustangs exploded for seven runs in the first inning, setting the tone for an 8-0 win in six innings. Emma Humpal and Molly Bull were key contributors with their hits, driving in multiple runs each. Pitcher Karlie Miller shined on the mound, pitching six shutout innings and striking out seven batters.

With the sweep, Southwest Minnesota State bounced back from a four-game losing streak and improved their record to 15-22 overall and 6-8 in conference play. St. Cloud State, on the other hand, dropped to 22-16 overall and 5-7 in conference standings.

The Mustangs now sit in ninth place in the NSIC standings, surpassing St. Cloud State. They will look to continue their winning streak as they host Wayne State in their next doubleheader at Mustang Field on Wednesday.
