Minnesota State Spoils Southwest Minnesota State Softball Senior Day

In a thrilling regular-season finale, the Minnesota State Mavericks defeated the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Mavericks secured two one-run victories, 5-4 and 4-3, to spoil the Mustangs’ senior day celebrations.

Despite the losses, the Mustangs put up a valiant effort, with Morgyn Otte delivering a standout pitching performance. Otte pitched a full seven innings, holding the Mavericks to seven hits and one walk while striking out five batters. However, the Mavericks’ offense proved to be too much for the Mustangs to handle.

In game 1, the Mustangs rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 3-3, but the Mavericks quickly regained the lead in the top of the seventh. The back-and-forth battle showcased the competitive spirit of both teams.

In game 2, the Mavericks took an early lead with three runs in the first inning. The Mustangs fought back, narrowing the gap to 3-2 with a home run by Abby Russell. However, the Mavericks maintained their lead and secured the victory with a final score of 4-3.

With the regular season now concluded, the Mustangs will anxiously await the results of the Northern State games on Sunday to determine their fate in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference standings. The Mustangs currently hold the final spot in the conference tournament, but a strong performance by Northern State could bump them out of contention.

Despite the tough losses, the Mustangs showed resilience and determination throughout the games. As they look ahead to the possibility of postseason play, the team remains focused and determined to make a strong showing in the conference tournament.
