Minnesota Valley Lutheran (MVL) staged an impressive comeback to defeat Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (GFW) 14-11 in a thrilling Tomahawk Conference softball game on Thursday. Both teams kicked off their season with a high-scoring affair that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

The game was a back-and-forth battle from the start, with errors, wild pitches, and windy conditions adding to the excitement. GFW took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, but MVL quickly responded with a run of their own. The Thunderbirds extended their lead in the second inning, but MVL fought back with a three-run rally to cut the deficit to 6-5.

GFW continued to put pressure on MVL, scoring runs in the fourth and fifth innings to maintain their lead. However, MVL exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning, fueled by key hits from Karlee Prahl, Cassie Goeglein, and Briley Henderson. The Chargers took a 12-10 lead and never looked back.

Despite GFW scoring a run in the sixth inning, MVL added two insurance runs to secure the 14-11 victory. MVL head coach Katie Scherer praised her team’s resilience in overcoming the early errors to secure the win.

Pitcher Kathlyn Stadick was instrumental in MVL’s victory, pitching seven innings and striking out nine batters. Ashlyn Rodewald, Karlee Prahl, and Cassie Goeglein led the offensive charge for MVL, while Mady Lee, Taylor Schaffer, and Michal Nachreiner stood out for GFW.

With the win, MVL improves to 1-0 on the season and looks ahead to a doubleheader against Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Monday. The thrilling victory sets the tone for what promises to be an exciting season for both teams.
