Landon Long led his Maui Preparatory Academy boys golf team to victory at the Central Pacific Bank/Maui Interscholastic League team crown on Thursday. With a team-best score of 36, Long helped Na Pueo outdistance Baldwin 150-202, securing the championship aggregate score of 298-371.

Long, a key member of Na Pueo’s 2022 state championship team, had a disappointing performance at last year’s state tournament. Determined to redeem himself, Long has been on a mission all season, leading MPA in both segments of the MIL championship.

The team’s success was not just due to Long’s efforts, as fellow juniors Renner Chumley and Chris Salem also contributed with strong performances. Kai Shively, a first team MIL Division II basketball All-Star, stepped up on Thursday with an even-par finish, showcasing the team’s depth and talent.

Coach Jeff Hall praised his team’s work ethic and preparation, highlighting their exceptional performance in challenging wind conditions. Na Pueo clinched five state tournament berths with the MIL team title, setting the stage for a strong showing at the upcoming individual tournament.

Despite the loss, Baldwin coach William Kapoi commended Na Pueo’s strength and competitiveness, acknowledging the progress his team has made this season. As the Bears now shift their focus to the MIL individual tournament, the competition remains fierce for the final 10 spots to the boys state tournament.

Overall, Long and his teammates at Maui Preparatory Academy have proven their dedication, skill, and teamwork, setting the stage for a promising future in high school golf.
