Naeema Carter, a graduate student in the NC State College of Education’s principal preparation program, has overcome challenges and inspired others with her dedication to education. Despite being diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer, Carter continued her studies and completed her courses while working as a full-time teacher. She then served as an assistant principal intern at Willow Springs Elementary School in Wake County.

Carter’s journey in education began when she made a promise to a student in elementary school that she would be the one who stays, unlike the other teachers who had left. This commitment led her to pursue a career in school administration, with the goal of ensuring that every student feels cared for and successful.

Despite facing personal challenges, Carter’s determination and passion for helping children have not wavered. Her dedication to making a difference in the lives of students and families has been recognized by her peers and mentors, who organized a special surprise “clap out” to celebrate her journey as an educator.

Surrounded by loved ones, including her mother, son, and graduating cohort, Carter was overwhelmed with gratitude for the outpouring of support. She credits the College of Education for preparing her for the next step in her career and instilling in her the importance of leading with heart.

As she looks towards the future, Carter hopes to find a school where she can support students and teachers in creating a positive learning environment. Her ultimate goal is to make the world a better place, one school at a time, by helping children reach their full potential and feel valued within their community.
