Boardman Schools Recognized for Excellence in Music Education

Boardman, Ohio – Boardman schools have once again been recognized as one of the “best communities for music education” in the United States by the National Association of Music Merchants. This prestigious award highlights the exceptional music program at Boardman and sets it apart from other school districts.

Michele Prokop, chair of the music department at Boardman, expressed her pride in receiving this award for the eighth time. She credits the success of the program to the early start of music education in kindergarten and the dedication of the 12 music teachers, 10 of whom hold master’s degrees.

Unlike other schools where music teachers are expected to teach a variety of instruments, Boardman’s music instructors specialize in specific areas, allowing them to teach at a high level. Bill Amendol, a Boardman graduate and orchestra teacher, emphasized the high expectations set for students to perform like professionals.

Joel Monaco, who teaches fourth graders, described the music program at Boardman as exceptional and highlighted the district’s commitment to developing a passion for music in students. The district provides instruments and encourages private lessons, fostering a love for music from an early age.

One of the key factors that sets Boardman apart is its own performing arts center, which allows students to showcase their talents in a professional setting. Despite music being an elective at the high school, 40% of students choose to participate in music programs, reflecting the strong support and enthusiasm for music education in the community.

Boardman’s dedication to music education dates back to the 1970s and continues to thrive today, thanks to the collaborative efforts of teachers, students, and parents. Most recently, the active groups of band and orchestra parents organized a successful fundraiser to purchase new instruments, further enhancing the music program at Boardman.
